Neuromechanics of the Hand: Functional Degrees of Freedom during Thumb Opposition
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION In classic mechanics, degrees of freedom (DOF) are defined as the minimum number of independent coordinates needed to describe a system’s position. The human musculoskeletal system has many mechanical DOF through which countless movements are accomplished. However, natural movements are characterized by the coordination of the DOF such that few vary independently. The concept of functional degrees of freedom (fDOF) is introduced to describe the very limited DOF of purposeful, coordinated movements (Li 2006). The purpose of this study was to examine the fDOF of thumb joints associated with opposition movement. It was hypothesized that thumb opposition would be characterized by widespread interand intra-joint coordination, leading to reduced fDOF from its mechanical DOF.

Opposition splint for partial thumb amputation: a case study measuring disability before and after splint use.
STUDY DESIGN Case report. INTRODUCTION A combined burn and a partial amputation can be extremely debilitating as the thumb constitutes 40% of the entire hand when evaluating functional impairment. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Measure disability with and without opposition splint use after partial thumb amputation due to a burn. METHODS Impairment and disability measures were completed at discharg...

The use of the abductor digiti minimi transfer to restore opposition in patients with hypoplasia of the thumb has been widely described in the literature. It has been found to be effective in restoring abduction, but less so in restoring the rotational component of opposition. In cases where there is concomitant supination of the thumb, abductor digiti minimi transfer alone would not result in ...
متن کاملThe SPRING Hand: Development of a Self-Adaptive Prosthesis for Restoring Natural Grasping
Commercially available prosthetic hands are simple grippers with one or two degrees of freedom; these pinch type devices have two rigid fingers in opposition to a rigid thumb. This paper focuses on an innovative approach for the design of a myoelectric prosthetic hand. The new prosthesis features underactuated mechanisms in order to achieve a natural grasping behavior and a good distribution of...
متن کاملKinematics of Thumb Opposition
INTRODUCTION One of the most important hand functions is thumb opposition, which results from flexion, abduction and axial rotation at the carpometacarpal, metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints [1]. The thenar muscles, innervated by the median nerve, are critical for coordinated thumb movements. It is commonly observed that thumb opposition is impaired with median neuropathy [2]. The c...

Background: Ulnar club hand (ulnar deficiency) is a rare congenital disorder of the upper extremity. In the Flatt series among 2758 congenital disorders of upper extremity only 28 cases of ulnar deficiency were reported. Due to its rarity and variations in presentation current data in the management of the deformity is very limited. Here we present our experience and results in comparing manage...
